Selected To Represent Uganda at the One Young World Summit – Colombia

Just imagine that I have been selected as a suitable representative of my country Uganda and generation for the One Young World Summit 2017, taking place from 4 to 7 October in Bogotá, Colombia.

In a letter from One Young World, states that, Kwehangana Hamza has been selected as an outstanding candidate to attend the upcoming Summit on the basis of his capacity for leadership, concern about global issues, ability to generate and articulate impactful ideas, teamwork and evidenced commitment to volunteering or other extracurricular activities.

At the Summit, the most valuable young talent from global and national companies, NGOs, universities and other forward-thinking organisations are joined by world leaders; the One Young World Counsellors. Previous Counsellors have included President Bill Clinton, Nobel laureate Kofi Annan, Sir Bob Geldof, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Sir Richard Branson, Arianna Huffington, Emma Watson, Justin Trudeau, Jamie Oliver, Fatima Bhutto, Unilever CEO Paul Polman and Mary Robinson.

Delegates debate, formulate and share innovative solutions for the pressing issues the world faces. Following each Summit the attending delegates become One Young World Ambassadors and are charged to work on their own initiatives or lend the power of the One Young World network to those already in existence. Ambassadors have gone on to have an impact on issues ranging from education, global business, health, human rights, sustainable development and transparency.

What is One Young World?

One Young World was founded in 2009 by David Jones and Kate Robertson. A UK-based charity that gathers together the brightest young leaders from around the world, empowering them to make lasting connections to create positive change.

OYW stages an annual Summit where the most valuable young talent from global and national companies, NGOs, universities and other forward-thinking organisations are joined by world leaders, acting as the One Young World Counsellors.

At the Summit, delegates debate, formulate and share innovative solutions for the pressing issues the world faces.

At past Summits, delegates were joined by a line-up of Counsellors that included Justin Trudeau, Emma Watson, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Sir Bob Geldof, Kofi Annan, Sir Richard Branson, Meghan Markle, Professor Muhammad Yunus, Jamie Oliver, Jack Dorsey and Mary Robinson. Click here to find out more about past Counsellors.

After each Summit, the delegates, who are then known as One Young World Ambassadors, work on their own initiatives or lend the power of the One Young World network to those initiatives already in existence. Of those in employment, many return to their companies and set about creating change from within, energising their corporate environment.

Who can be a One Young World Ambassador?

One Young World delegates are 18-30 years old who have demonstrated leadership ability and a commitment to effecting positive change. Many have already had an impact in their home countries on a range of issues, including the role of business in society, transparency in business and government, the impact of climate change, global health and hunger relief.

At the Summit Closing Ceremony, delegates graduate as One Young World Ambassadors, joining a network of young leaders who are creating positive change around the world.

I, therefore, wish to share with you the Agenda of the 2017 OYW Summit in Colombia where i am invited to attend.

During the Summit, more than 1300 young leaders from more than 190 countries will meet, where we will be able to be heard, express our opinions, concerns and propose solutions to fit the global issues of this 21st century.

In order to be able to attend Summit, I must collect enough funds to cover up for OYW fees. This is where I’m asking for your help. I need to raise a total of USD 7,000 by Sept 30th which will cover.

Hotel accommodation in Bogota, All meals and catering, On-the-ground transport in Bogota, All handouts and Summit support materials, Flight to and fro the summit.

For that reason, i have set up a crowdsourcing campaign where you are invited to support me financially.

Last Update: 4th Oct 2018

I am sorry to announce that I am unable to attend this year’s One Young World summit in the Hague, Netherlands starting off this October (17th – 20th).

This being the second time still having the opportunity go represent my country, Uganda, after the first one last year in Bogota, Colombia. I am left hopeless after conducting a year-long crowdsourcing campaign which turned not be a success.

OYW summits bring together over 1000 young leaders from all over the world every year with concern about global issues, ability to generate and articulate impactful ideas, teamwork and evidenced commitment to volunteering or other extracurricular activities.

It should be noted that Uganda is at the top of the list of the least represented countries each year, and having an opportunity to be approved and selected my OYW is an awesomely great one for not only the selected individual but also the country from which they come and represent.

Next year’s summit will be held in London, UK and my prayer is that Uganda be represented. I know alot of other amazing young leaders out there.

My failure to attend is due to not being able to raise the required delegate fees £3,255 to access the summit, resources, hotel, etc.

However, I am truly indebted and thankful to every individual that supported me in this campaign. Am very thankful to those that supported financially, those that shared it with friends, and all my well-wishers.

Am truly humbled and can’t have enough words to express this.

I’ve reached out to every individual that sent me a penny in support of this campaign and i’m glad on reading a few of there responses.

Thank you Mio, Mary & Lauren, Arthur, David, Yasin and many of you off Facebook and anonymous.
