How To Recover Deleted WhatsApp Chat

Whatsapp is quite an easy way to catch up with friends, family, and colleagues because of its instant messaging nature. So you can take pictures, videos, documents and share them with your contacts. However, it is also possible to accidentally delete your precious documents or photos and then comes the trouble. This is especially common with touchscreen devices which by their nature are very responsive to any touch command. In this article, i will share with you on how to recover deleted WhatsApp chat and i hope it will be handy.

For example, you meant to hit add a conversation shortcut, but instead, you tapped Delete chat. Then absentmindedly you clicked “yes” and like magic, everything disappears and this is a very common mistake. So there you are wondering how you can retrieve your important file and the search is getting more and more difficult. Pause, I have a quick solution for you.

Nothing Was Ever Deleted!

It may come as a surprise or you probably heard about this somewhere, but, when you delete images and video from your WhatsApp chat history they aren’t really erased until you delete them from the file.

Locating WhatsApp images and video that have been deleted from the chat history is therefore fairly easy. On your phone, simply go to File Manager and in the WhatsApp folder open either Audio, Images or Video folder depending on the media you are interested in, then scroll through the list to find the file. You can do this either on your phone or computer. On the computer this can be done by connecting your phone via a USB cable and browsing through the folder you are interested in and you will find it there. If you deleted this information from your file manager or need to find deleted messages, there are other solutions for you too.

Solution One – How To Recover Deleted WhatsApp Chat

Well, the first solution will apply if you backed up with Google Drive before and this applies to Android phones. In order to recover deleted WhatsApp chat, you must have already turned on automatic Google Drive backups. You do this within WhatsApp in the Settings Menu > Chats >  Chat Backup > Back up to Google Drive.

You are highly cautioned not to operate your Android phone or update anything once you find out that you lost the important data and want to recover it. Or else, your backup file will be overwritten and what you deleted by mistake cannot be extracted back.

If you already backed up and stored your WhatsApp data to Google Drive, you’ll be able to see it when you reach the ‘Chat Backup‘ page in the WhatsApp menu. To restore it and retrieve all your backed up messages, you will simply have to delete the WhatsApp app and reinstall it in the Google Play Store. You’ll be able to restore your data after verifying your account and signing in. This process will only allow the option to back up and restore for devices with the same Operating System. However, if you did not back up your messages before then you will not able to restore the data after you have accidentally deleted it. You should keep in mind that the default setting updates your backup every night at 2 am. This means that if you deleted the message before that time, it may be lost.

If it doesn’t allow you to select what you need to recover in particular, then you need to restore the whole file on the backup copy even where you do not need the rest. After this, you can retrieve what you need and discard the rest.

NOTE: * In case you skip the restore step when re-installing, then you will not be able to recover your lost files this way.

Solution Two – How To Recover Deleted WhatsApp Chat

So there you are, you did not back up with Google Drive! There is a solution for you too. On your computer, download a Trustworthy Android Recovery Application. You can usually get free trial downloads by searching Google, but make sure you choose one with relatively good reviews and from a genuine website.
For example, with Android Photo Recovery, you will be able to recover lost Android data such as contacts, text messages, call history, photos, WhatsApp history, videos and all those other things I cannot think of right now in just some simple steps.

This software supports almost all of the Android devices including Samsung, HTC, LG, Motorola so don’t be afraid.
First of all, you will have to connect your android to your pc using a USB cable. You will then be required to launch Android Data Recovery after downloading and installing it on your computer. Then, you will be asked to connect your Android to the computer via USB cable.

The next step is for you to set up your Android so that it’s searched by the computer to enable USB debugging.  Please note that for Android 4.2 or newer versions, enter Settings > About Phone > Build number continuously until you get a notification saying “You are under developer mode”. Then go back to Settings >Developer options  > USB debugging

Your device will instantly be detected by the recovery tool after enabling USB debugging. Choose the detailed files that you want to be scanned, for example, “worklife”. After that, you can click “Next” to move on.

The next step will be for you to grant or authorize the scan on your Android device by the software.
Sit back and relax because it will take you some time to scan the data. After all that, you can preview all recoverable data found in the scan result one by one. If you want to recover WhatsApp chat history, click “WhatsApp” and you can preview all your WhatsApp chat history to choose which to restore on your computer. Click “Recover” button, and within few minutes it will be restored and you can retrieve your WhatsApp deleted messages from your Android then disconnect from your computer.

Please note that Chats older than a week are more difficult to restore. If you belong to this category, this method will only work if WhatsApp is set to back up to the local internal memory or SD card.  In case you have also backed up to Google Drive, you will have to disconnect from that.(Google drive)

Remove your micro SD card from your phone and insert it into a reader then connect the reader to your computer.

Navigate to the Database folder in the SD card; go to WhatsApp, then databases.

Within the Databases folder, you will see many files: those are your chat backup files! You will notice that they are saved with names like “msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt” where “YYYY-MM-DD” is the year, month and date respectively.

First, rename “msgstore.db.crypt” adding “OLD” or anything else to the filename. Then check out the files below: there should be several files marked with different dates. Select the file that you want to restore – find a file from before you accidentally deleted everything and rename it “msgstore.db.crypt”so as to replace a more recent file.

Fit the micro SD card back in your Android device, then uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp. Choose Restore when prompted. The chat file saved as “msgstore.db.crypt” will be selected and your old messages shall be restored.

Beware *that restoring an earlier chat file will delete your current chat history, and there’s no simple way to merge your new message with your old, recovered messages. You will have to repeat the same process above in order to recover the new messages that have been lost.

This is much simpler. So after accidentally deleting a message thread, document, photo or video, just give your phone a shake and WhatsApp will ask if you would like to undo the Archive action. Just simply tap “Yes” and the message thread will be restored. Unfortunately, this “undo” trick only works for the message thread you deleted last. In case you accidentally deleted more than one thread, it will only recover the most recent one.

BackUp On iCloud

This quick and easy option is for those that use iCloud available with most mobile phone networks.

Simply go to and log in with your Apple ID and password.  Thereafter click ‘Text Messages’, Search for the deleted messages and select the ones you need to restore.

After that go to the Settings app on your iPhone, select ‘iCloud’ and turn off ‘Text Messages’. Select ‘Keep on my iPhone’ then click ‘Text Messages’ back on and tap ‘Merge’. Your messages will instantly appear.

Or another solution would be to go to ‘Chat Backup’ page in the WhatsApp menu then delete the WhatsApp app and reinstall it in the App Store. You’ll be able to restore your data after verifying your account. This is only possible if you have backed up with iCloud.

BackUp On iTunes

In case you do not have a backup stored to iCloud; you could have one on iTunes instead. Simply connect your iPhone to your computer, open iTunes and select your iPhone from the menu. If you have previously backed up your phone, you will see ‘Restore iPhone’ as an option on the ‘Summary’ page. Click the button to reset your smartphone data to the last time you backed up. You will then instantly get back any messages you had saved on your phone at that time.

iPhone Data Recovery Tool

Alternatively, download a trustworthy iPhone data recovery tool on your computer (you can easily get free trial downloads by searching Google) but make sure you choose one with good reviews from a genuine website so as not to waste time. Next is for you to open the iPhone data recovery tool and follow the on-screen instructions and the connect your iPhone to the computer when asked. Thereafter Select ‘Start‘ or ‘Scan‘ to search the data on your mobile device.

Go to the ‘Messages’ section of the results and search for the messages you want to retrieve, click on the texts you want then wait for them to transfer. As soon as the transfer is complete, you may disconnect your phone.

In case your chat history fails to restore

During your restoration processes for your smartphone, in case you are not prompted to restore your old chats then this could be an indication that Your SD card and/or chat history is corrupted. Alternatively, it could also mean that your backup is too old and WhatsApp cannot restore backups that are too old. You could also have a different phone number than when you backed up your chats and thus your old chat cannot be restored.

Keep in mind that these formulas only work for messages you’ve deleted very recently. But if you have changed your SD card, moved your data from one phone to another, or performed a factory reset, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to get your messages back.  Anyway, this does not stop you from trying. A miracle could happen.
Another key point is that next time you are using your phone, try not use up a lot of your phone memory through activities like downloading, taking photos, visiting websites and doing anything else that uses up your phone memory. This will help ease on the restoration process of your deleted files.

In case you run a manual backup, it will overwrite the most recent automatic backup file so be careful.

Your WhatsApp/Databases folder is most likely located in your device’s internal memory on newer devices. You must also have maintained the same phone number in WhatsApp that you had when you backed up your chats.

Make sure as well that you have a file manager. This will be useful for renaming the backup files.

Don’t Want To Lose Your History?  Here is a Way Too

Create a manual backup by going to WhatsApp then to the ‘Menu Button’. Click on the Settings and go to ‘Chat Settings’ and then tap on ‘Back up chats’.

The manual backup file will be saved as “msgstore.db.crypt7” or “msgstore.db.crypt8” in your /SD card/WhatsApp/Database

Go ahead and Save this file as “msgstore.db.crypt7.current”or”msgstore.db.crypt8.current” (depending on the original file extension). This is meant so that you do not get it confused with other backup files during the restoration process.

After restoration has been completed, you will be able to find the backed up file either in the internal memory or SD card in the WhatsApp folder database.

Good luck with recovering your lost data. Hope you found this guide helpful
